A group of IIT-educated professionals, some with two decades of experience in the field of development, and their friends, formally established PSI in 1988. It is registered as a society in New Delhi, under the Societies Act (1860), and under the Foreign Contributions Regulations Act (FCRA) with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
PSI’s activities are spread all over India. Its geographical focus is on the central-western Himalayan region, the mountain states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and the poverty-ridden districts of western Orissa. Its operational headquarters are located in Dehra Doon in Uttarakhand state.
